Got a call this week from someone in the MEC’s office - wanting to know a bit more about the proposed GP number plate system and how we felt about it?
It was not a short call!!
Thanks to Debbie, Bill and Robert – your suggestions were put forward as workable alternatives.
There seems to have been quite a debate in the Provincial Assembly regarding this issue – the opposition even questioning the scrap value of the metal plates and the potential theft risk!
Based on the conversation, it seems as if we are not really any closer to an implementation date but, hopefully will not be using the RFID– embedded radio chip - technology proposed (number plate recognition technology is already widely used and therefore we feel RFID would be superfluous – and expensive).
Also, current personalised plates remain....you’ve paid for them!
What we still need an answer to - what on earth have the number plate consultants been doing since June last year and, more importantly, have they earned their keep?
By the way, we're looking to give this space a name - which of the following get your vote:

I don't understand why we need to change them in the first place. Can we not spend our money on fixing the infrastructure first.
Same thing with all these town and street name changes. Should we not house the homeless before we spend millions on such wasteful things?

i don't understand why, each time we run out of a certain number series, ALL cars have to change to a new number series. it should be possible to have the old AND the new in place, so that existing cars do NOT have to be re-registered, get new numberplates, etc.

Ek stem saam met hierdie persoon. Waarom die nr. plate verander ? Volgens my is dit nog 'n manier om geld te maak uit die publiek.

Previous commentators, like most "rich" South Africans, are totally missing the point. This has nothing to do with new number plate systems or demographically acceptable road names. It is all to do with this governments ideas of job creation. Work, with little or no economic benefit, is being created for otherwise unemployed people and the so called rich are footing the bill. It could be called a private sector Unemployement Benefit Scheme.
While on the subject can anybody explain the economic or social benefit of taking the name of a person seen by some as being a villan off a road or public building and replaceing it with the name of another person seen by some as a villan? Jan Smuts Airport is now OR Tambo airport. DF Malan Drive is now Beyer Naude Drive; the list goes on. All that has happened is that many peole have made much money for nothing and the public has paid for something very few wanted. Rather spend the money on housing, schools, hospitals, road repiars or a new car for Julias!

yes i cannot see why spending so much money to change the number plate system the govement must work on getting to stop the corruption of law inforcement officers then they can more concentrate on the illegal numberplates i work in Midrand and get about ten traffic vehicles pulling of cars next to the road and believe me if you dont want to give them a bribe they try to issue you with a big fine they need to sort that out and spend more money to help people with food and places to stay i see hundreds of people daily without food.
