29 January 2013:
The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) is concerned about the increase in the cost of motoring. Expectations are that the fuel price is once again set to rise by as much as 40 cents per litre for petrol and about 20 cents per litre for diesel at the end of January 2013.
Next month, increases to the fuel levy are likely to be announced in the Minister of Finance’s budget which will further add to the cost of motoring and also transportation of commodities.
“From a transportation point of view, 2013 is set to become a very expensive year for the consumer. Indications are that not only will the cost of fuel be higher this year, but the increased cost of vehicle licencing and toll fees will significantly add to the transport burden of the motorist,” said the AASA.
“Unfortunately there is very little the motorist can do to mitigate the actual costs other than to change the way the vehicle is driven by becoming a more fuel efficient and safer driver. Safe public transport for most motorists is simply not available as an alternative.” the AASA added.
An announcement regarding the change in fuel prices is expected on Friday, 1 February 2013.
