The Automobile Association (AA) and AA Travel Guides are setting new standards and raising the bar in the camping and caravanning world.
Previously, only Fixed Accommodation comprising hotels, lodges, self-catering and B&B’s were rated according to the high AA Quality Assured (AAQA) standards. Now camping and caravanning sites will also be assessed and rated as AA Recommended, AA Highly Recommended or AA Superior.
“South Africans are well known for their love of the outdoors so we want them to have the same peace of mind when visiting camping and caravanning sites as they have when they visit AAQA hotels and B&Bs,” said Geoff Elske, the AA’s Travel General Manager.
Camping and caravan establishments will be categorised according to numerous criteria which include; whether they are a resort with a multitude of facilities, a standard caravan park with minimal facilities, located in the bush, a game or nature reserve or whether they are suitable for 4X4 or overnight stops. This means that those who enjoy camping and caravanning will know which establishments are the best and make an informed decision before setting off on their holiday.
Outdoor establishments will apply to be part of AAQA accreditation but before their application can be approved, they will be thoroughly assessed by experienced caravan campers. The team of assessors will be headed by Dr Neels van Heerden, a seasoned caravanner and assessor himself.
“We rate the experience the guest can expect and rather than work with a check list, we want the establishment rated on the really important things such as quality of their site, ablutions, SABS approved power points, customer service levels and of course security” says Van Heerden.
