The Automobile Association is pleased to see that the new SANRAL board has taken the decision not to implement tolling on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan route.
The deferment of the tolls beyond February 2012 to allow for a further perusal of submissions is the first positive indication from SANRAL that public outcry and protest may have been heard.
“The logic of using an existing tax seems a rational solution to a looming problem that looks to have serious financial implications to the regional economy. If this was applied in Gauteng there would be no reason for the fuel tax not to be used on other major projects country wide for which the tax was initially intended”, said the AA.
