Attention on the RTMC is welcomed by the AA

09/12 August 2013:

Cohesive action needed to conduct vital work

The recall on 7 August of the acting CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) by the Department of Transport has successfully pushed this ailing agency into the much needed spotlight.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) welcomes this attention, as the RTMC has been in a state of limbo over the last few years following the dissolution of the board in April 2012 and the lack of appointment of a permanent CEO. As a result, critical projects related to road safety have been neglected. The UN Decade of Action was launched in 2011 and yet we are still waiting for the South African strategy to be formulated and introduced to the public. Without the strategy there can be no focus on individual projects that are meant to reduce the number of deaths on South Africa’s roads.

No real projects have been implemented and real action to curb the road carnage is impossible when there is no approved cohesive strategy or policy is in place. The AA recommends that the vital work expected of this agency be incorporated into the Department of Transport where the necessary focus and impetus can be applied.
