Car battery problems are high on the AA's call out rate but thanks to new technology such as silver calcium, modern batteries (which the AA sells) provide much better cold starting performance and longer service life than ever before. All this despite the fact that there are far greater amounts of electronic and current consuming equipment found in today's cars.
The AA has had 199 273 call outs so far this year and 73% of these were battery related. 28 506 batteries were sold to our Members, which is 14% of our total battery related cases.
If your car is already displaying worrying symptoms such as sluggish cold starting in the morning then the only solution may be to get your battery replaced. The AA installs only silver calcium - lead acid batteries, which give up to 20 per cent longer service life than conventional lead acid products. The best advice is to have the battery checked before the holiday season, particularly if it is more than three years old. An automotive battery lasts up to three years which means around 30% of cars need a new battery each year - a worrying statistic considering that without a working battery a driver is stranded.
The AA offers free battery installations to its Members and each technician is fully equipped and use sophisticated equipment.
"Batteries produced in South Africa are of good quality but they are often poorly maintained. A common error is to overfill or under fill a battery with distilled water, which reduces the battery's lifespan and failure inevitably occurs at the most inopportune moment," said William De Lillie, manager of battery and patrol fleet.
The AA Battery technicians are fully equipped to deal with all battery related problems and each vehicle carries a unique high tech portable device that produces a complete diagnosis of a vehicle's battery and charging system. This is a free service to AA Members.
"AA Battery Service is the largest mobile battery service in Africa and its unique service is available at a reduced rate to AA Members" added De Lillie.
