Trade Tests

Contractual Learner Trade Test

This test is only available to registered apprentices.

Entry requirements:

Section 13 trade test “Merseta” - delegates may take the test after 18 Months of service as a registered time based apprentice (for Automotive Electricians and Diesel Mechanics) or 2 years of service as a registered CBMT apprentice (for the Motor Mechanic):
  • A full N2 (four subjects) with the relevant trade theory
  • Full NQF 2 and 3 qualifications within the required trade
  • A fully completed CBMT course
Contractual Learner information
Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) Trade Test

This test would be written by a candidate who has been working in the industry as a general worker and has no formal qualification within the specific trade yet. Should he/she meet the entry requirements, they may attempt the trade test.

Entry requirements:

  • ARPL candidate may take the test after 4 years practical experience and provided they have one of the following:
    • A full N2 (four subjects) with the relevant trade theory
    • Full NQF 2 and 3 qualification within the required trade
  • ARPL candidate may take the test after 5 years practical experience and provided they have one of the following:
    • N2 or higher with relevant trade theory 
    • A passed CBMT level 2 exam 
    • NQF 2 and 3 unit standard relevant to N2 or higher trade theory
  • Section 28 trade test “Merseta” - apprentices may take the test after 6 years practical: With no formal training having been done, however a minimum level of literacy is needed to ensure they can read instructions and write down answers to questions accurately.

Preparation Course

The AA Technical College also offers a Preparation Course. This is aimed at candidates wanting to refresh their knowledge prior to writing their test. Now also available in evening classes.

Please note this is not a crash course of being a technician. The delegate needs to bring prior knowledge and ability in all facets of the trade. The course is not designed to tech the full trade merely give a guided opportunity to refresh correct processes and iron out bad habits.

NOTE:

All Trade Tests need to be approved by Merseta prior to the commencement of the test. AA Training College can assist you in the process of applying for the test approval.
